Genius Peers: Schumann and Mendelssohn
This week's program pairs two composers not only from the same stylistic period, the Romantic age, but who also lived in the same city for some time and were good friends. Mendelssohn and Schumann, two of the most famous and popular musicians of their day, enjoyed mutual admiration and companionship during the years that the Schumanns, Robert and Clara, lived in Leipzig, where Mendelssohn was director of not only the Gewandhaus Orchestra, but also had started the Leipzig Conservatory, where he recruited Robert Schumann as a teacher of composition.
Ultimately, both composers died of broken hearts, but for now, enjoy their music which came from joyful and productive periods of their creative lives.
