Terrance McKnight is the WQXR weekday evening McKnight’s musical experiences — from glee club soloist and accomplished pianist, to professor at Morehouse College, and finally as producer and host of several music programs for public radio — have consistently juxtaposed the European Classical tradition alongside American classic traditions, such as jazz, gospel, African American spirituals and other musical genres.
In 1960, President Eisenhower famously remarked to Leonard Bernstein, "You know, I liked that last piece you played; it's got a theme. I like music with a theme, not all them arias and barcarolles."
Taking a cue from that remark, this week is a sampling of arias, overtures, barcarolles and other melodic delights that deserve more time on the airwaves.
