Ralph van Raat (Marco Borggreve)

Dutch pianist Ralph van Raat made his New York City debut at (Le) Poisson Rouge on May 12 with a solo piano survey of modern Minimalism, including music of Louis Andriessen, David Lang and John Adams.

A prolific performer, Van Raat has appeared as a soloist with the London Sinfonietta, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, among others. His numerous awards include First Prize of the International Gaudeamus Interpreters Competition and the Fortis MeesPierson Award of the Concertgebouw, Amsterdam.

Gavin Bryars and Frederic Rzewski have both composed new works specifically for the pianist; he's also worked closely with composers including Jonathan Harvey, Helmut Lachenmann, György Kurtág, Magnus Lindberg and Arvo Pärt.
