Everybody feels the pinch during hard times, and it's these moments where creative souls dig even deeper to express themselves.

Folk singer Aunt Molly Jackson was no stranger to the hard life in late 19th century Kentucky, taking responsibility for her siblings after her mother died when she was 6. She had already been taught over 100 folk songs and started to compose some herself, eventually taking a job as a young midwife in a neighboring coal-mining town. Her experience witnessing impoverished families and their struggles, coupled with her no-nonsense, outspoken attitude drove her to write passionate folk songs about the social injustices she encountered.

This week, Aunt Molly Jackson sings Hard Times in Coleman's Mines (recorded in the 1930's). We also hear other composers' takes on difficult times in our lives, including those by Eric Satie, Steve Reich, and Robert Schumann.
