Beethoven's Third Piano Concerto and Shostakovich's Fifth Symphony

As milestone birthdays go, turning 30 can be fraught. But as this week's broadcast shows, it's an age of possibility on the concert stage. Joining the Philharmonic is Andris Nelsons, the 32-year-old Latvian conductor who is the music director of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. He leads Shostakovich's sprawling Symphony No. 5. Also on the program is Jonathan Biss, age 30 and fresh from his Carnegie Hall recital debut, who is the soloist in Beethoven's Piano Concerto. No. 3.
