Live Web cast: Newspeak and Secret Society

Tuesday, February 22, 2011

On Thursday, February 24 at 7:30 p.m., Q2 and New Sounds Live team up to bring you a live audio Web cast from Merkin Concert Hall hosted by WNYC's John Schaefer. Part of the inaugural Ecstatic Music Festival, this evening features the eight-piece, high-octane ensemble Newspeak alongside Darcy James Argue's Secret Society.

The politically-conscious, indie-ensemble Newspeak premieres The Sleep Room, Part 1 by Darcy James Argue, a Grammy nominee and award-winning composer and jazz musician. Argue is also director of the 18-piece big band Secret Society which offers premieres by Vijay Iyer, Nicole Lizée and to bring the concert full circle, by Newspeak founder, David T. Little.

Listen to composer and Ecstatic Music Festival curator Judd Greenstein talk about the impetus behind this collaboration:

This concert by Newspeak and Darcy James Argue's Secret Society is the second of four New Sounds Live Web casts on Q2 from the Ecstatic Music Festival, housed at Merkin Concert Hall. The first featured the Bang on a Can All-Stars' 2011 People's Commissioning Fund Concert and world premieres by Karsh Kale, Nick Brooke and The National's Bryce Dessner as well as works by New Music stalwarts Julia Wolfe, Steve Martland and Pelle Gudmunsen-Holmgreen. You can hear the entire concert as well as on-demand excerpts here.
