U.S. Envoy Mitchell Postpones Israel Trip

Tuesday, March 16, 2010

US special envoy to the Middle East George Mitchell will hold off on his trip to the Middle East indefinitely, following Israel's announcement that it will build 1,600 new units of housing in East Jerusalem.

Mitchell had planned to head to the Middle East this week to finish preparations for another round of Israeli-Palestinian peace talks. But Israel's announcement to build, which came during Vice President Joe Biden's visit to Israel last week, has changed Mitchell's plans. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu apologized on Sunday for the timing of the project's approval, but said the housing would go ahead as planned.

Meanwhile, The Associated Press reports that hundreds of Palestinians are hurling rocks at police and setting tires and garbage bins on fire where the construction is being planned.
