Christoph von Dohnányi has a unique connection to the New York Philharmonic. Music director Alan Gilbert was assistant conductor to Dohnányi from 1995-97 at the Cleveland Orchestra, where the elder maestro was at the helm for nearly 20 years.

Today, Dohnányi is an in-demand guest conductor steeped in the old-school Hungro-Austrian tradition, one that surfaces in this week's program. On tap is Bruckner's mighty Fourth Symphony, and Mozart's Sinfonia concertante, starring concertmaster Glenn Dicterow and violist Cynthia Phelps.
