Saturday Morning Cartoons: Brahms' Lullaby

Saturday, September 24, 2011

Humming Johannes Brahms’s Lullaby Op. 49, No. 4 is almost a hard-wired instinct by now for countless parents rocking their babies to sleep. But in the 1999 Disney cartoon Maestro Minnie, the piece goes through several musical treatments – jazz, rock -- much to the dismay of conductor Minnie.

And in a Tom and Jerry romp from the 1940s, Tom uses the tune to tame the savage beast. The lullaby appears around the four-minute and seven-minute mark of the cartoon titled Quiet Please!
