25 Years with the Anonymous 4

The Choral Mix with Kent Tritle

The all-female vocal ensemble Anonymous 4 celebrates 25 years of music-making this year. In honor of their anniversary, and contributions to the choral and early music worlds, Kent Tritle highlights the quartet on this week's show. In addition to hearing their music, founding member Ruth Cunningham talks with Kent about the ensembles history and work together.

Since 1986, the Anonymous 4 have toured throughout North America, Europe and Asia. Their niche for combining historical scholarship and contemporary performance creates the pure, unadorned style of singing for which they are known. With a discography of almost twenty recordings, the Anonymous 4 have topped music charts many times, including spending 76 weeks on Billboard's Top Classical Chart. Despite being founded as an early music ensemble, the versatile singers have also enjoyed collaborations with leading composers of our time. The ensemble has collaborated with composers such as David Lang, Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, Steve Reich, among others.

On this week's show we sample the diverse repertoire of the Anonymous 4. Selections include works of the early American folk tradition, as well as the music of celebrated medieval composer, Hildegard von Bingnen.

The stellar quartet will perform on the Music before 1800 series right here in Manhattan on October 23, at 4PM.

I hadn't heard "The Choral Mix" in quite a while (my bad, Kent!). I heard this program featuring Anonymous 4 and it was wonderful. I'll try to hear the program more regularly in the future. I own a number of Anonymous 4 CDs and have heard the ensemble live a number of times. it's always great to hear them and you!

This made for a peaceful, contemplative, almost spiritual Sunday. Thanks.
