For the duration of Maximum Reich, Q2 and Nonesuch Records are pleased to offer an exclusive download of Dance Patterns.

Composed in 2002 for 2 xylophones, 2 vibraphones and 2 pianos, Dance Patterns is 6+ minute sample of many of the sounds and techniques that have come to define Reich’s music. You can't find it on iTunes or in record stores. It’s only available here until December 16th, so download it starting Thursday and bounce your thoughts of this piece off fellow listeners.

This is wonderful to refreshen our awareness of this musical genius.

I remember first hearing Steve Reich at a concert in Toronto in 1971 - his music was eye-opening and a brilliant antidote to the electronic synthesizer sounds that were sweeping contemporary music at that time. It was so refreshing to absorb this precise, high-tech music created completely acoustically. My most vivid memory was "hand clapping" with it's intricate patterns so simply created and it's ecstatic finish - as clear to me now as it was on first hearing almost 40 years ago.

Thank you Steve Reich and thank you WQXR for bringing us this music.
