Autumn is here, and as Halloween approaches we're reminded of those entities potentially lurking in the cool, autumn breeze. This week host Terrance McKnight features works that survey all things mystical, from ghostly spirits to the sweet autumn air.
David Lang's Sweet Air opens this weeks mystical show. Based on a trip to the dentist, Lang recalls the ethereal intoxication of laughing gas, cleverly depicted by oscillating winds and overlapping rhythms. Ingram Marshall's Holy Ghost puts a haunting spin on Bach's Mass in B minor, quoting arias from the masterpiece and composed for Oboe d'amore and an eerie electronic delay.
Steve Nieve's Welcome to the Voice takes listeners through a tale of a man's love with an opera diva and his encounters with the spirits of eminent opera characters such as Butterfly, Carmen and Norma. We hear Song of the Ghost of Carmen from the opera, with mezzo-soprano Sara Fulgoni portraying the Ghost of Carmen, and singer-songwriter Sting as Dionysus.
Also up this week, music of Billie Holiday, Dino Saluzzi and much more.
