Saturday Morning Cartoons: A Nutcracker Suite Garden Party

Saturday, December 03, 2011

For this week’s Saturday Morning cartoon we get into the holiday spirit with music from the second act of Tchaikovsky’s beloved Nutcracker ballet.

These dances are featured in “Nutcracker Suite,” a segment of Disney’s 1940 film Fantasia, where instead of the land of sweets, we are in a magical garden of dancing flowers, fish and fairies.

I was born 5 days after WQXR was born. Listen to it at least 16 hours a day, every day. Fantasia is still the best animated film ever created.

The magic of the animation with the music has never lost its very special appeal even though it was first viewed in 1940. So lovely to see it again.
