Jherek Bischoff & Wordless Music Orchestra: Live from Merkin Concert Hall

Just Announced: A Live Webcast of the Ecstatic Music Festival's SOLD-OUT Opening Concert

Saturday, February 04, 2012

This Saturday, February 4 at 7:30 pm ET, Q2 Music presents a live audio Webcast of the Ecstatic Music Festival’s sold-out opening concert, featuring Seattle-based producer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Jherek Bischoff. The concert marks the first-ever collaboration between Wordless Music Orchestra and the Ecstatic Music Festival.

Saturday's show will feature Bischoff in collaboration with a number of A-list "rock" innovators, including David Byrne, Deerhoof's Greg Saunier, Zac Pennington of Parenthetical Girls, singer/songwriter Mirah, Carla Bozulich of the influential alt-country band the Geraldine Fibbers, composer/performer Charlie Looker, and fellow Dead Science member Sam Mickens.

A founding member of Seattle-based group The Dead Science, Jherek Bischoff has worked with a who’s-who of indie rockers including Parenthetical Girls, Casiotone for the Painfully Alone, and Xiu Xiu. He also a member of the performance art troupe Degenerative Art Ensemble. Listen to Bischoff discuss Saturday's upcoming performance in a recent interview with host Nadia Sirota.

The performance is the launching point for the second year of Merkin Concert Hall's Ecstatic Music Festival, a two-month series of concerts curated by composer Judd Greenstein. Founded on the spirit of collaboration, the festival brings together adventurous musicians from the "classical" and "rock" worlds for inspired and unlikely collaborations.

@Kurt:
9:28, the vocal line. If you are going to quote, you have to name the source. Otherwise it is plagiarism. I don't want to be spiteful or destructive, I merely want to support good, informed art.

I am so delighted to see that Carla Bozulich was performing at the Ecstatic Music Festival. I have followed her career from the early days with Ethel Meatplow and later, Geraldine Fibbers, and Evangelista. She is my favorite female singing artist and song writer.

Gunther:

I don't know which "Rite of Spring" YOU'RE listening to, but it definitely ain't Stravinsky's!

You're a good cop Gunther - thank you - I couldn't agree more.

Does nobody else realize that the first vocal piece is "Us and Them" by Pink Floyd, right down to the tango-like accompaniment pattern? The second piece starts with a note-by-note quote of the opening melody of the "Rite of Spring" by Stravinski. That is when I stopped listening.

I don't believe that Bischoff is purposely or even knowingly plagiarizing, but part of being an actual composer is knowing your field well enough to know when your original idea is actually just a memory of another composer's work.

This gives all of us a bad name, and we have to call each other on plagiarism when we hear it.

I missed the streaming. Is there any way I can still see it or did I miss my only chance to watch?

Only wish is that we'd had a live chat for this one, would have been cool. But a superb concert, Ecstatic is off to such a great start this year, and THANKS, Q2 Music, for the livecast tonight!
