On Saturday, Feb. 11 at 7 pm at Carnegie Hall, pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet joins Orpheus for Shostakovich's Piano Concerto No. 1 for Piano, Trumpet and Strings, an early work known for its playful, sardonic humor as well as its challenging piano and trumpet parts. Orpheus trumpeter Louis Hanzlick joins Thibaudet.

Also on the program are several works with a national flavor, notably Michael Tippett’s Divertimento on Sellinger’s Round, Honegger’s Pastorale d’été and Tchaikovsky’s Serenade for Strings.

Thibaudet has been a fixture on international concert stages for more than three decades. Yet he first approached the Shostakovich Concerto just over a year ago, and began seriously studying it in the last several weeks. In this video, he tells WQXR about the learning process:

Program:

TIPPETT Divertimento on Sellinger's Round
SHOSTAKOVICH Concerto No. 1 for Piano, Trumpet & Strings
