2Cellos Take Classical Crossover Videos to the Next Level

2 Cellos music video for 'Hysteria' (YouTube)

Croatian duo 2Cellos are the de facto bad boys of classical crossover whose videos have evolved into short-form art films. The group has taken to using experimental film techniques and the result is wide exposure for 2Cellos to audiences that may have never experienced classical crossover, or classical for that matter.

A cover of Michael Jackson's “They Don’t Care About Us" was directed by Zdenko Bašić. The video is set on an imaginary battle field that mixes images of Napoleonic soldiers, modern air planes, and giant chess pieces looming high above it all.

“Hysteria” is directed by Kristijan Burlovic and is a cover of a song by the popular group Muse. The 2Cellos guys are locked in a mental hospital as a scary nurse with a giant syringe treats them. It turns out they are playing all those notes on broom handles. Mind = blown.

The video is rather disorienting and leaves the viewer with a feeling of excited foreboding. If after watching this you’re questioning who is really in control, you’re not alone.

I really enjoy these guys! My husband and I saw them perform this past year at the Count Basie Theater in Red Bank NJ. They are wonderful show men! Yes, they love modern music but also mix in and some great classical. While I am not an expert on playing cello, I happen to think they are great!
Thanks for bringing them to the forefront on your website WQXR!
