April is Pianists Month on the Young Artists Showcase and this week’s show features Taiwanese pianist Ching-Yun Hu.

She first came to the Showcase years ago as a teenage competition winner. Hu went on to win the Audience Favorite Prize at the Arthur Rubinstein Competition in Tel Aviv, and then the Concert Artists Guild International Competition in 2009. Now she’s back on the Showcase, performing Ravel’s wickedly difficult Gaspard de la nuit with Chopin’s Barcarole in F sharp major dropped in the middle for good measure.

Hu also told us about her experiences studying music in Taiwan, New York, London and Germany, learning the pipa, and performing with an orchestra of Chinese traditional instruments.

YAS alum Tanya Bannister gives us another coda from her Concert for Japan: Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata.

Program details:

Ravel: Gaspard de la nuit, "Ondine"
Chopin: Barcarole in F sharp major, Op. 60
Ravel: Gaspard de la nuit, "Le gibet"
Ravel: Gaspard de la nuit, "Scarbo"
-- Ching-Yun Hu, piano, recorded live in the YAS studio.

Beethoven: Moonlight Sonata
-- From Tanya Bannister’s Concert for Japan.
