Meet the 2014 winners of the Nadia Reisenberg Recital Award.
This month marks the 110th anniversary of the birth of pianist Nadia Reisenberg, a longtime friend and frequent guest on WNYC and WQXR. This namesake competition takes place at Mannes College The New School for Music, where Reisenberg taught for many years. However, to Young Artists Showcase host Bob Sherman, Reisenberg was known simply as "mother."
The first of this year's Reisenberg award-winners, Yekwon Sunwoo, we already met in a concert recording this past May. We visit another of his collaborations with the Sendai Philharmonic in Japan. Our other winner is the 21-year-old pianist Magdalena Mullerperth. We hear her in a recital broadcast from last year at the Sendesaal, the studios at Radio Bremen in Germany. To start the program, a recording of Reisenberg at age 19, in a Duo-Art piano roll from 1923.
