Christoph von Dohnányi has a long history with Hans Werner Henze’s one-act opera The Bassarids: Dohnányi premiered the opera in a German translation at the Salzburg Festival in August 1966, and led the first performance with the original English text at the US premiere at the Santa Fe Opera in 1968.
