Last November, Pulitzer Prize-winning composer David Lang held a YouTube competition inviting pianists to interpret his recent piano piece, Wed, off of his latest piano work this was written by hand. On May 6, 2012, the winner and runner-ups were invited perform at the album release party at (Le) Poisson Rouge.
Winner Peter Poston was chosen from 39 contestants from around the globe by a forbidable panel of pianists that included Vicky Chow, Jeremy Denk, Lisa Moore and Andrew Zolinksy. Poston, currently living in Melbourne, Australia, was flown to New York City for the event, which also featured the world premiere of Wavy, a six-handed keyboard piece for the three runner-ups Catarina Domenic, Katherine Dowling and Denise Fillion.
So Percussion opened the program with music Lang composed for director Jonathan Parker's award-winning documentary The Woodmans. Bang on a Can guitarist Derek Johnson offered a distorted, electric guitar rendition of "wed," which was immediately followed by Poston's performance of the same piece. The show also featured the premiere of a piece for two pianos, performed by Poston and Zolinsky (not included in the available archived recording).
The program closed with three excerpts from Lang's emory pieces, delivered by Zolinksy.
