"Show Boat," the cherished 1927 landmark of the American musical theater by Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II, arrived at the Lyric Opera of Chicago earlier this year for an extended run. The story follows the lives of a company of theater folk and features such musical theater standards as "Old Man River" and "Can't Help Lovin' that Man." The production, directed by Francesca Zambello, stars baritone Nathan Gunn and soprano Ashley Brown.

Lyric Opera of Chicago's production of Show Boat as broadcast over WQXR today
was absolutely glorious in every respect. The American Musical Theater at its height. Let us hope that the enterprise can be found to put this performance on DVD and/or CD. Thank you, WQXR.

What a beautiful piece of musical Americana. It reminded me of the great film of this musical. Will go rent it right now on Netflix.
