Pianist Emanuel Ax performs Debussy's three-part Estampes for solo piano and joins the orchestra under the baton of Alan Gilbert in Messiaen's Couleurs de la cité céleste (Colors of the Heavenly City) for solo piano and ensemble. The program ends with Mahler's dramatic and lyrical Symphony No. 5.
