The Orpheus Chamber Orchestra opens its 40th season with a program that features a Rossini overture, Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony and a world premiere by Augusta Read Thomas. WQXR will broadcast the concert live from Carnegie Hall on Thursday, Oct. 11 at 8 pm. Naomi Lewin and David Garland host.

Thomas' Earth Echoes was commissioned in honor of the centenary of Gustav Mahler’s death. Mirroring Mahler’s final vocal composition, The Song of the Earth, Thomas’ new score features two soloists: mezzo-soprano Sasha Cooke and baritone Nathan Gunn, both in their debut appearances with Orpheus.

Program details:

Gioachino Rossini: L'Italiana in Algeri, Overture

Augusta Read Thomas: Earth Echoes (world premiere; Read the texts here)

Ludwig Van Beethoven: Symphony No. 5 in C minor
