Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro

In a possibly fictional movie moment from the bio-pic film "Amadeus," Mozart exclaims that his sneaky comedy The Marriage of Figaro, is "the best opera yet written!" While the quote may be apocryphal, Mozart's Figaro truly is an incomparable blend of comic high jinks and the emotional complexities bred by commonplace, human foibles.

This 2010 performance from San Francisco Opera features Luca Pisaroni as Figaro and Danielle De Niese as Susanna. Rounding out the lead roles are Catherine Cook (Marcellina), John Del Carlo (Dr. Bartolo), Lucas Meachem (Count Almaviva) and Greg Fedderly (Don Basilio). Conductor Nicola Luisotti leads from the pit.

Again thank you Mr. Eisenberg.
What beautiful music. What a bore life would have been without Mozart.
As we say in Naples, bless the mother that bore him.

We apologize for the confusion with the casting information we received some incorrect details on the production but are in the process of remedying them on the page. Thank you.

The performance on the air is recent, from 2010, with an entirely different cast from that described above on this Web page. What happened to the Prey/Popp "Figaro"? That would have been an extraordinary treat.

Archival broadcast? Hermann Prey? Diane Nicolini is telling us this is the 2010 broadcast with Luca Pisaroni. And not bad at all. But will WQXR please explain what's going on?

Le Nozze is spun with such grace,
With music like exquisite lace,
It warms each heart cockle,
Oh what a debacle
Had Mozart's birth ne'er taken place!

Beaumarchais and Da Ponte, too,
Deserve a loud merci beaucoup!
From a magical trio
This work with such brio
Is a musical dream come true!

Maestro Prey... superb voice, stellar smile, wonderful actor. His is my 'go-to' Fledermaus for the holidays. One can't help but sing and dance along. Yummy with a cherry on top!
