On Mar. 27, Q2 Music presented a live audio webcast of Icelandic composer-producer Valgeir Sigurðsson and new-music violist Nadia Sirota live from (Le) Poisson Rouge.
As founder of the Iceland-based record label Bedroom Community and the prolific Greenhouse Studios, Valgeir Sigurðsson has achieved international recognition as as versatile musician and sought-after collaborator. His list of musical co-conspirators stretches from Björk, Radiohead's Thom Yorke and Blur's Damon Albarn to dynamic young composers including Nico Muhly, Paul Corley and Daníel Bjarnason. In this show, it's his talent as a composer and performer of coloristic sensitivity that's on full display — talent that culminated last year in the release of his third studio album, "Architecture of Loss."
Valgeir Sigurðsson with Nadia Sirota
Heralded by the New York Times as "a bold new-music interpreter and the violist of choice among downtown ensembles these days," violist Nadia Sirota is a passionate advocate for today's most adventurous composers. Though a member of the American Contemporary Music Ensemble, Alarm Will Sound and yMusic, it's her distinctive solo work — as evidenced in her recent album "Baroque" (streaming here) — that explores the boundaries of experimental and indie-classical which has done the most to define her as a musician of distinctive originality.
Disclosure: Nadia Sirota was a former weekday host for Q2 Music. She continues to host live events for the station and to pursue a produced show devoted to composer portraits to debut later this spring.
