Video: Welsh National Opera Singer Proposes Marriage to Fellow Chorus Member

Thursday, May 23, 2013 - 03:51 PM

Welsh National Opera singer Joe Roche asked fellow chorus member Paula Greenwood to marry him before an audience of 700 during a dress rehearsal of Wagner's Lohengrin in Cardiff on Wednesday.

Lohengrin, of course, contains one of the most famous wedding scenes in all of opera, making the occasion especially suited for such a grand gesture. Roche told Wales Online that he met Greenwood when the pair were attending a masterclass in their native Ireland in 2004. They went on to perform as freelance singers with the Welsh National Opera for five years, with both becoming full-time chorus members this season.

Roche's proposal came just before the new newly-engaged couple were to perform the opera in front of WNO patron Prince Charles at the production's opening at the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff Thursday night.

The video was featured Thursday on Norman Lebrecht's Slipped Disc blog.
