Engelbert Humperdinck's 'Hansel & Gretel' from the Lyric Opera of Chicago. Engelbert Humperdinck's Hansel & Gretel from the Lyric Opera of Chicago. (Dan Rest/Lyric Opera of Chicago)

The Brother's Grimm usually lived up to their name and in Engelbert Humperdinck's Hansel and Gretel, when the brother and sister are sent into the forest to find their dinner, they encounter the Sandman and Dew Fairy. Those meetings turn out nice, but that isn't the case when they run into the witch, who wants to fatten them up.

This production from the Lyric Opera of Chicago features just enough scary and gruesome ingredients, plus a food-flinging scene.

HANSEL and GRETEL's composer ENGELBERT HUMPERDINCK was an ardent fan of WAGNER and told WAGNER after hearing PARSIFAL, "consider me as a Knght of the Holy Grail, I was so imoressed !" This opera has everything one desires in a musical presentation. It is most singable. It is melodic throughout. It has its own special uniqueness in melody and orchestration. The orchestration is colorful and SO beautiful. ALL concerned in this presentation deserve the highest accolades for a job well done. KUDOS Lyric Opera of Chicago !!!

This entire opera fits on two LPs. There is NO WAY it will take 3 hours. Whatever else may be on the program, why can't we the listeners be told in advance?

I make this statement without comment. Last week on the Chicago station, they presented a double bill Elektra AND Hansel. Why does QXR just give us Hansel alone?
CBC Hope you are well. All my best.
