England's Thomas Adès is known as one of the most skilled and original composers and conductors of his generation. This broadcast from the Los Angeles Philharmonic features his annual visit to Walt Disney Concert Hall with a sampler of the 39-year-old's works, plus one early 20th-century showpiece. The program opens with a short curtain-raiser, These Premises Are Alarmed, continues with a suite from Adès' first opera, the 1995 Powder Her Face, and culminates in his Violin Concerto (“Concentric Paths”), featuring the soloist Anthony Marwood. For something entirely different, Adès concludes the program by leading Respighi's splashy and visceral showpiece Feste Romane.
