Mezzo-soprano Susan Graham, a specialist in French repertory, recently returned to the New York Philharmonic for performances of Chausson's sumptuous song sequence Poème de l'amour et de la mer ("Poem of love and the sea").
This broadcast captures that appearance along with two other masterpieces of French Romanticism: Berlioz's brash curtain raiser, Les francs-juges Overture, and Saint-Saëns's Symphony No. 3, "Organ." The latter work features Kent Tritle on an electric organ, a surrogate for the pipe organ that Avery Fisher Hall currently lacks. Andrew Davis conducts.
