Evan Ziporyn

Live from (Le) Poisson Rouge on September 27, 2010

Thursday, October 21, 2010

Since its founding in 1992, New-Music ambassadors, the Bang on a Can All-Stars have converted countless listeners to contemporary music through their energetic and rousing performances that speak to the masses. The All-Stars are versatile artists who not only play their instruments with ferocious dedication but several members also lead double lives in other musical realms including composition, instrument designing and teaching.

Founding clarinetist, composer and MIT professor, Evan Ziporyn is one such Renaissance man and his works, Typical Music and No Return are spotlighted in this September 27 show at (Le) Poisson Rouge. He is flanked by violinist Todd Reynolds and fellow All-Stars, pianist Vicky Chow and cellist Ashley Bathgate.

Ziporyn is well-known for his deep-seeded interest in Balinese gamelan music which he has studied for over thirty years. Gamelan has found its way into much of Ziporyn's musical life, from founding a gamelan ensemble at MIT named Gamelan Galak Tika to incorporating Balinese theatrical elements into his 2009 opera, A House In Bali, which spotlights both Western and Balinese musicians. Both Typical Music and No Return, though not directly featuring traditional gamelan performers, certainly invoke the Balinese spirit through their rhythmic drive and harmonic language.
