This fairy tale Young Artists Showcase comes from a recent Philadelphia concert titled Astral In Wonderland.

Performances for this and next week's show were recorded at concerts presented at the Trinity Center for Urban Life by Astral Artists. The Philadelphia-based arts non-profit believes — like the Young Artists Showcase — that "the future of classical music belongs to today's emerging musicians."

Violinist Born Lau starts us off with Robert Schumann’s Märchenbilder or Fairy Tale Pictures, for Viola and Piano, Op. 113. Storytime continues with pianist and Showcase alum Andrea Lam, this time accompanying violinist Kristin Lee. They chose The Wild Swans Suite, from a ballet written by Australian composer Elena Kats-Chernin who was inspired by the Hans Christian Andersen story of the same name. Since it's hard to follow the plot without a program, our broadcast of The Wild Swans Suite will include clarifying narration by Showcase host Bob Sherman.

Closing out the program is Swiss cellist Lionel Cottet with music from Spain, Manuel de Falla's Suite Populaire Espagnole. Instead of the usual piano accompaniment, Cottet chose Argentine guitarist Federico Diaz as his performing partner.
