The Thursday night airing of this show is being pre-empted for WQXR's Carnegie Hall Live broadcast. It will air as usual on Sunday at 11 pm.

J.S. Bach had to make his way in various positions—Leipzig was a very expensive town to live and work in. During his early years in the city, Bach earned extra money by testing out old and new organs around Germany.  His prestige came from his organ virtuosity and a verification of an instrument by the master was a stamp of approval for a church, not to mention adding weight to the composer’s wallet.

This week's program features a few transcriptions originally intended for the organ and harpsichord. Dinu Lipatti performs the Wilhelm Kempff arrangement of the Siliciano, Rosylan Tureck plays the 15th Goldberg Variation in G minor, and the 2-Part Invention No. 1 is in the hands of Glenn Gould.
