Ani Kavafian, Bob Sherman, Ida Kavafian, Jonathan Feldman (Merrin Lazyan / WQXR)

It was 39 years ago this week that Harold W. McGraw Junior helped launch the Young Artists Showcase, making it the longest on-going series in the history of WQXR. It was around that time that host Bob Sherman first introduced the sibling duo of violinist Ani Kavafian and violinist/violist Ida Kavafian to the station. To celebrate this Showcase birthday, the Kavafians joined us in the studio, along with long-time collaborator Jonathan Feldman (pianist) to play Mozart, Moszkowski, and Gershwin.

Ani and Ida Kavafian made their debut as a sibling duo in 1983 at Carnegie Hall, and they still appear frequently together in concert. They have played with the symphonies of Detroit, Colorado, Tucson, San Antonio, and Cincinnati. They also independently enjoy thriving careers, playing with America’s leading orchestras and teaching at leading conservatories. They met pianist Jonathan Feldman when they were all studying at the Juilliard Pre-College Division, and the three musicians have been performing together for decades.

Tune in Wednesday at 9pm to celebrate the Young Artists Showcase’s 39th birthday!
