End of Summer Re-Introductions
Wednesday, September 16, 2015
Host Bob Sherman welcomes the 2015-16 season with young artists who may require a re-introduction. This week we'll hear some performances that, for one reason or another, didn't make it to earlier episodes of the Young Artists Showcase.
Pianist Cahill Smith, who we first introduced on the showcase back in 2010, was a winner of the Minnesota Orchestra's Young Artists Competition. By 2013, Cahill was earning his doctorate at the Eastman School of Music and became deeply committed to the music of Russian composer Nikolai Medtner. When we last heard him on the Showcase, he was, in fact, preparing an all-Medtner program for his New York recital debut. The version heard on this evening's program is of a new studio taping of these pieces.
A much loved and highly remembered Russian melody, Rachmaninoff’s Vocalise is played by the Tashkent Trio. Only two of the three members are involved, the Kim sisters, cellist Yulia and pianist Olga. Here, they are in performance at a Lyric Chamber Society concert in New York.
In May 2014, we devoted an entire hour to the Aurora Borealis Ensemble with Showcase alumna Eunice Kim. Fast forward to this evening’s hour and she performs Heinrich Biber's Passacaglia for solo violin, a movement from his Mystery Sonatas. Others on the program include the Rondo finale from Ingolf Dahl's Concerto for Alto Sax, as well as selections from J.C. Bach's Zanaida performed by members of David Stern's Opera Fuoco Company.
