Orchestral Suite No. 4 in D Major: Overture

A fashionable form in Bach's day were instrumental suites, comprised of dances and an overture, sometimes based on an opera. Bach wrote four Bach's Orchestral Suites – each an amalgam of French, Italian and German styles – which display some of the beguiling ways he would approach the festive side of music-making. The Academy of Ancient Music will perform them live Friday night at Zankel Hall, a performance that WQXR will broadcast live. In the meantime, enjoy this Overture from their new recording of the works.
