The Young Artists Showcase's 39th season opens with an annual recital by the 2016 winners of the Gina Bachauer Piano Competition at The Juilliard School. In 1980, Juilliard named its most prestigious piano competition after Bachauer, a legendary Greek pianist. Bachauer award recipients receive not only free tuition, but living expenses as well for the entire academic year. The recital took place on Thursday, September 29th in Juilliard’s Paul Hall, and it honored this year's recipients, Anna Han and Mackenzie Melemed. Han and Melemed are both students of Robert McDonald at Juilliard.

Han is originally from Mesa, Arizona and is a former Presidential Scholar in the Arts. She opens the program with the first of Prokofiev's three "War Sonatas," followed by a suite of three musical miniatures by Scriabin and Chopin. Melemed is from Newton, Massachusetts and he was the highest ranking American competitor at the Gina Bachauer International Competition held in Utah. He has performed at the White House during the holiday season for five consecutive years. Melemed's program includes two works by Nikolai Medtner. The two award winner join forces for the final piece of the evening: a waltz for two pianos from Rachmaninoff's Suite #2.

During this event, the Robert Sherman McGraw-Hill Award for Music Education and Community Outreach was given to violinist Karen Cueva for her commitment to overcoming social exclusion through classical music.
