Today at 1 pm, the Metropolitan Opera broadcasts Umberto Giordano's verismo love story, Andrea Chénier.

After their well-received pairing in Il Trovatore, Marcelo Álvarez and Patricia Racette reunite in Giordano’s melodramatic story of life in times of revolutionary fervor, a passionate tale of the ill-fated love of a dashing poet and an aristocratic lady, set against the backdrop of the French Revolution.

The Met revives its 1996 production, a stylized realist treatment by Nicolas Joël, now the outgoing director of the Paris Opera.

Giordano said to Martinelli that Gigli is the lyric poet and that he should be the patriot, after the latter heard Gigli. There's so much alternation between lyric and dramatic requirements in Che'nier. Gigli always chose Che'nier when debuting in new houses, understandably. Del Monaco, Corelli and Tucker were great in their unique ways. I think Alzarez will mature as an outstanding Che'nier the more he sings it, as evidenced by this afternoon's performance compared to the opening night. I'd like to hear him sing it again. Regarding Mr. Lucic, I was applauding here at home along with the audience for "Nemico della Patria?!" To date, Ms. Racette is the only Maddalena I've heard in the final duet who sings "Son io!" (D sharps) as written. Mr. Alvarez spoke it, according to tradition/custom.

I suggest you listen to the 1960 Vienna b'cast with Tebalsi & Corelli. He had the power but his diminuendi. legato, & portamenti are incomparable. Yes, I agree MDM power, fantastic. Corelli power & finesse. Both are equallly valid.

I'm listening to "Un di' all'azzurro spazio", from Andrea Chenier, in my opinion, one of the truly great operas. There has been no Mario del Monaco since his heyday, to do this opera justice. I saw Gigli at the San Carlo in Naples during WW II and between these two tenors, there are no others. Renata Tebaldi, you have nothing to be concerned about, either!

There was a mini-ice Age from 1350 to 1850. Very little of this is shown in films, etc. There is a fine documentary shown on the History Channel entitled Mini Ice age or something like that. Very interesting look at all the upheavals it caused. Revolutions start with empty stomachs.

My dear Cavanaugh, Spring, Reign of Terror, sacrifice to save a mother. What a great opera and Madelon, the blind woman still shakes me up and I am a tough old lady. As for Pippo, I have the Neapolitan album as well as operas and concerts.I know the Abballati.You can catch him on Youtube singing Canto Ma Sottovoce. What a tearjerker. I am a mix of Sicilian and Vesuvian and New York. I would like to have my ashes spread on Vesuvius. Good God, what a combination. I hope my son stops by later on so that I can enjoy most of this opera.

CBC La Pasqua, la Primavera & two bloody executions. What a combination.This is a good cast but nobody could tear your hear out with " La Mamma morte" like Tebaldi. I looked at all my Pippo song discs, he sings many in Neopolitan. the four in Sicilian are: a la Barcillunisa, Cantu a timuni, Abballatti & Mutteti di lu Paliu all recorded in 1947 & '50. Enjoy my dear & I wish you tante belle cose, pace, e buonna fortuna in tutti cosi. I mix my Sicilian & Italian too much but that's what Etna does to you. Mille, mille bacci.

Yes Mr. Les, the chorus and orchestral music for the Viva Robespierre is outstanding but for me, too brief.I know this opera is melodramatic but it is a beautiful one.

I'll be listening, score in hand, with eagerness to this afternoon's performance of one of my favorite operas. I missed a strong, defining personality in the title character's opening night performance, however. Some of the notes weren't held to full value by Che'nier; Che'nier was more convincing with each succeeding act. I'd hoped for faster tempi in the orchetra and more fire, on the whole, especially in the chorus's "Viva Robespierre!" section that incorporates the last six notes of "La Marseillaise". The third act I thought was the most outstanding in every way. Maddalena sounded flat in the top notes of the second act love duet beginning with Che'nier's "Ora soave, sublima ora d'amore...Ge'rard sounded most committed and fervent in his opening "son sessentani..." as well as the third act's "Nemico della patria..." and his duet with Maddalena starting with "Perduto!". Madelon's entreaty was appropriately heartbreaking: a scene Luigi Illica devised on his own. If I'm not mistaken, there's a four-bar cut after "Morte...morte": the crescendo is elminated and the fortissimo "Larghissimo" orchestral peroration concludes Act III. I guess not to be outdone by Ms. Opalais, Maestro Noseda is currently conducting this week's Philadelphia Orchestra group of concerts in works by Casella, Prokofieff and Saint-Sae"ns! Here's hoping Margaret Juntwait will confirm this.

CBC: Hope you are well. Weather getting better but still have not heard my cardinals as yet. Looking forward to Chenier today. Watched an episode of Ed Sullivan show a few weeks ago and Tebaldi and Corelli sang the final duet. She had lost weight and looked beautiful. He was beautiful as well. AND her voice did not suffer because of the weight loss. I like Racette. She is simpatica and very graceful. Opera is theatre. Could not watch Falstaff because of very fat singers. Falstaff is supposed to be a fat fool, and that's OK. I could not look at the two sopranos.
Folks out there, don't work yourself up into a lather over this. It's OK to be honest.
