Thursday, June 23, 2016
This week, World of Opera presents Handel's Alcina in a production by the Grand Théâtre de Genève and performed at the Opéra des Nations in the Swiss city. Nicole Cabell stars as the enchantress, who's seduced numerous lovers on her island.
The opera begins with Alcina's latest love interest, Ruggiero, completely under her spell. However, Ruggiero's fiancé, Bradamonte is en route, disguised as a man and determined to win him back. Once on the island, the disguised Bradamonte finds herself the romantic conquest of Alcina's sister, Morgana. But with the help of some magic of her own, Bradamonte attempts to rescue Ruggiero and the other men held captive by Alcina's sorcery.
