Hebrew bridal procession from 'Song of Songs' (Alamy/Wikipedia Commons)

Hark! As the Q2 Music inaugural Advent Calendar draws to a close, enjoy our final and celebratory offering from composer and sacred music aficionado, Nico Muhly. Full of bell-like pitched percussion and sub-bass synth, this track provides us with a gorgeous update to the hymn Jesus Christ the Apple Tree, which first appears published in England in 1761.

Now a perennial Christmas Choir favorite, the text is said to be a reference to Song of Songs 2:3 in which an apple tree is used as an allusion to Christ: " As the apple tree among the trees of the wood, so is my beloved among the sons. I sat down under his shadow with great delight, and his fruit was sweet to my taste."
