Listen: Bearthoven Plays 2015 MATA Festival
Saturday, July 25, 2015
The fourth evening of the 2015 MATA Festival featured the contemporary classical and avant-garde jazz trio Bearthoven. Bearthoven is a collaboration between pianist Karl Larson, bassist Pat Swoboda, and percussionist Matt Evans.
The trio performed pieces by American composers Jonathan Nangle and David Alan Broome and Icelandic composer Fjóla Evans. They were joined on stage by improviser Amanda Schoof as a part of her score Intimate Addictions. Composer-vocalist Du Yun premiered her piece The Man Who Swallowed a Snake.
The evening concluded with a MATA-commissioned piece Corporate Talent Factor’s Next Top Idol! by British composer, performer and filmmaker Adam de la Cour. De la Cour’s music typically includes absurdity and satire; he often composes pieces that involve himself as the victim of various humiliations.
Founded by Philip Glass, Eleonor Sandresky and Lisa Bielawa in 1996, MATA is a not-for-profit organization that commissions, presents and supports the music of young composers. MATA presents a week-long festival of music by composers under age forty each spring in New York City.
