Wednesday, May 11, 2016
This June 11 performance from the 2015 Ojai Festival centers on the music of American maverick composer Edgard Varèse and Mexican composer Carlos Chavez.
The show includes performances from members of the International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE) and the percussion ensemble red fish blue fish, with soloists Claire Chase on flute, Gloria Cheng and Vicki Ray on piano and vocalist Mellissa Hughes.
Also included is Carlos Chavez's Toccata for Percussion. The piece was was composed especially for composer John Cage's percussion ensemble, but was ultimately never performed – the group was unable to play the difficult drum rolls in the opening section.
This on-demand music is part of a partnership between Q2 Music and the Ojai Music Festival to share live recordings from the festival dating back to the 2012 season.
