2015 Cone Composition Institute Concert with composer and participant Shuying Li (Edward T. Cone Composition Institute)

Tuesday, October 20 at 8 pm, Q2 Music streams world premieres by four young composers, as recorded live this summer as part of the NJSO Edward T. Cone Composition Institute, a program presented by the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra (NJSO), Princeton University and Edward T. Cone Foundation that promotes emerging composers and workshops and premieres new orchestral music.

Composers Shuying Li, Reinaldo Moya, Luke Carlson and Brendan Faegre were selected from an international applicant pool of university composition students and composers in the early stages of their professional careers to participate the intensive five-day program, culminating in this performance. The composers were mentored by director Steven Mackey and NJSO conductor and music director Jacques Lacombe.

Their compositions draw from the poetry of Dylan Thomas, Gabriel Garcia Marquez's One Hundred Years of Solitude, the ideal time of day for landscape photography and indie hero Beck Hanson. Also included is Mackey's Urban Ocean, which comments on the duality of marine life off the heavily-populated California coast just south of Los Angeles.

The audio at the top of this page features insights by Mackey and interviews with all four composers, recorded in the Q2 Music studios. Listen to individual pieces below.

Program:

Shuying Li - Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night

Reinaldo Moya - Siempre Lunes, Siempre Marzo

Luke Carlson - The Burnished Tide

Brendan Faegre - Dirt to Gold

Steven Mackey - Urban Ocean
