Listen: Jeremy Denk Performs György Ligeti's Piano Etudes
Monday, June 01, 2015
For the final concert of the 2014 Ojai Music Festival, pianist and then music director Jeremy Denk performed the first two books of György Ligeti's Piano Etudes. Denk regards the works as a "crowning achievement of [Ligeti’s] career and of the piano literature," in an essay accompanying his commercial recording of these pieces.
In the program notes for the June 15 performance, musicologist Christopher Hailey posits that rhythm was Ligeti's central preoccupation in these pieces. Ligeti himself has described these études as a synthesis of “the meter-dependent hemiola as used by Schumann and Chopin and the additive pulsation principle of African music.”
This on-demand music is part of a new partnership between Q2 Music and the Ojai Music Festival to share live recordings from the festival dating back to the 2012 season.
