Presented in partnership with WNYC's New Sounds and host John Schaefer, this concert featured the world premiere of a new vocal version of the composer's interactive film/music piece, Ritornello, as well as excerpts from the Pulitzer-winning Partita for 8 Voices, performed by Shaw and the a cappella vocal octet Roomful of Teeth.
Known formerly as an active, versatile performer in the New York new-music scene, Shaw – who also plays violin with the American Contemporary Music Ensemble, is a member of the laptop ensemble Sideband and a regular performer with Alarm Will Sound – skyrocketed to international attention as a composer this past April for being the youngest ever recipient of the prestigious Pulitzer Prize in Music. She was 30 years old at the time.
With only one commercially available CD to her name, Shaw's instrumental music remains little known to the larger public. Tonight's live webcast offers a chance to discover more from the multi-talented, multi-instrumentalist vocalist-composer.
This concert was engineered by Edward Haber (technical director) and George Wellington (music mix).
