Listen: Roomful of Teeth Premieres Ted Hearne and Anna Clyne at National Sawdust
Wednesday, November 04, 2015
October 17, Grammy Award-winning vocal octet Roomful of Teeth took center stage at the 2015 SONiC Festival at National Sawdust for an evening of diverse selections from their two albums and world premieres of Anna Clyne’s Pocket Book VIII and Ted Hearne’s racially-charged song cycle Coloring Book.
Anna Clyne's Pocket Book VIII derives its material from William Shakespeare's Sonnet 8, compelling a man to have children with his wife, and colors it with non-Western vocal techniques such as overtone singing. Ted Hearne's Coloring Book is a cycle of five songs derived from texts by Black American poets such as Zora Neale Hurston, Claudia Rankine, and James Baldwin.
The program also featured music by Missy Mazzoli, Caleb Burhans, William Brittelle and Roomful of Teeth vocalist Eric Dudley.

This performance was recorded, mixed and mastered by Jeremy Kinney.
The American Composers Orchestra’s inaugural SONiC Festival, presented in 2011, was hailed as "a brilliant and unpretentious showcase for music in the new millennium" (The Guardian). The second edition returned in 2015 with over 20 world premieres, and music from over 80 composers age 40 and under at venues across New York City. Q2 Music is the digital media partner of the SONiC Festival, and all concerts will be available for on-demand streaming at q2music.org.
