International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE) (Armen Elliott)

On this performance from the 2015 Ojai Music Festival, conductor and festival director Steven Schick leads performances of Julia Wolfe's Four Marys, Iannis Xenaki's Thallein, and Lou Harrison's Concerto for Pipa with String Orchestra. The show features Peter Evans on trumpet, Wu Man on pipa, members of ICE (International Contemporary Ensemble) and the string ensemble Renga. The performance was recorded live on June 13, 2015.

The program marks the world premiere of Wolfe's string arrangement of Four Marys, a 16th century Scottish ballad that tells the tale of the Queen of Scott's lady-in-waiting Mary Hamilton who becomes pregnant by the King of Scotts. Mary then kills the child and is sentenced to death for the murder.

ICE opens the concert with music of composer Rand Steiger (on faculty at UCSD) and composer-trombonist George Lewis (Columbia University).

This on-demand music is part of a partnership between Q2 Music and the Ojai Music Festival to share live recordings from the festival dating back to the 2012 season.
