London Symphony Orchestra with Pianist Yefim Bronfman
Saturday, October 24, 2015
On Oct. 4, WQXR broadcast a concert of the London Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Valery Gergiev, from the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark, NJ.
After eight years, Gergiev is stepping down as the LSO's chief conductor and is going out with a final U.S. tour featuring dazzling and explosive 20th century masterworks. Bartók’s Piano Concerto No 3 brings Israeli-American Yefim Bronfman to the keyboard, a pianist who virtually owns this work (and who recently drew headlines when he played it despite an injury). The same composer's suite from The Miraculous Mandarin opens the evening.
To conclude is the complete ballet score to Stravinsky's The Firebird.
