The Low End Theory

Marika Hughes takes a closer listen to the instruments on the low end of the register, the ones that lay down the foundation but don’t always get featured in the spotlight. She calls out the basses, tubas, timpani and even an oud. Though the sound is bottom heavy, the composers on the program run the gamut from Johann Sebastian Bach to Gustav Mahler to Elliott Carter.

Marika Hughes is the granddaughter of the legendary cellist Emanuel Feuerman as well as a Juilliard grad and working musician based in Brooklyn. Tonight she dons a new hat: guest host for All Ears.

Beautiful piece with the oud and piano. Do you know which piece it was and who is the musician?
