'Jenůfa' as performed by the San Francisco Opera (Cory Weaver/San Francisco Opera)

Tune in at 1pm for this week's Saturday at the Opera featuring Janáček's devastating Jenůfa, from the San Francisco Opera, starring Malin Byström in the title role.

The strong cast also includes Karita Mattila as Jenufa's stepmother, Kostelnička, who secretly drowns her stepdaughter's baby, born out of wedlock. Her horrific act — meant to save the family from disgrace — is also one of love and protection, and it forms the moral question at the core of this opera.

Jenůfa – Malin Byström

Kostelnička – Karita Mattila

Laca Klemeň – William Burden

Steva Buryja – Scott Quinn

Grandmother Buryjovka – Jill Grove

Conductor – Jiří Bělohlávek

Wonderful singing by all in this scorching Janacek drama. Hadn't heard it in a while, and enjoyed it very much. Hope the Met's production (in which Mattila reprises the role of Kostelnicka), which I'm going to next month, will be as good.
