Boston Pops Bring Holiday Joy With a Mannequin Challenge
Wednesday, December 21, 2016 - 11:13 AM
The holiday season is a warm and wonderful time of year, but between professional deadlines, hosting duties and wrapping up your gift shopping, it can be easy to forget all about the joy this time of year brings. Not so for the Boston Pops, who graced us with their own holiday-themed Mannequin Challenge and put a smiles on our faces.
The fun was directed by trumpeter Michael Martin, so naturally it focuses on the antics of the brass section: they’re running behind for the final "Sleigh Ride" rehearsal. When the “challenge” starts, several players are frozen out in the hallway, immobilized by the sheer force of internet humor.
The Mannequin Challenge is an internet video meme that involves a group of friends standing statue-still as a camera cruises around the scene, capturing the silly and awkward poses of the participants. A successful challenge doesn’t only require your friends to stand still, but also that the No. 1 single “Black Beatles” by American hip-hop duo Rae Sremmurd plays in the background. No one knows exactly why this is the song of choice, but it’s atmospheric intro seems to be a perfect fit for the stillness. While motionless bodies on camera aren't new, a California high school student was the first to set it to the hit song. It really blew up when sports teams and celebrities like the New York Giants and Paul McCartney himself got in on the fun.
Boston Pops, thanks for making us laugh as we sleigh ride into the holiday weekend.
